WHY 猫 is called 猫....
猫 (cat): nocturnal, sleeps through e day & wakes up in e late afternoon, rummages through e kitchen for food after midnight, curls up & koon comfortably on hard floors, benches, tables & other horizontal surfaces, easily spots rats, lizards & roaches scurrying around, spends long time bathing itself, climbs gates, low walls & maintains balance while walking on narrow kerbs, eats with small bites, sheds fur, loves sitting by & staring out of windows & climbing up to high spots, sensitivity to certain smells, tastes, high frequency sounds & vibrations that some people can't detect, meows convincingly enough to make other cats turn their heads, eats fish & leftovers, can be left alone for long periods of time, gets followed by other cats, can see well in dim lighting, etc.
乌猫 (black cat): a play on its surname, & because it was born very very dark. few believed that e kitten brought back from Scotland was Chinese ;) worse still, it grew up to have what they called an 'ang moh nose', further deepening their suspicions about its pedigree *lol*
花猫 ('coloured' cat): congenital dermal melanocytosis aka. 'Mongolian blue spot'. big fat larger than paw-size persistent/permanent blue-green blotch on its back just medial of its shoulder blade that strangers stare at & ask about whenever it goes swimming in its racerback swimsuit. some ask if it is a victim of domestic violence, & e collection of scars accumulated from kitten-hood & bruises from wushu don't help! =P spaghetti straps & other back-bearing stuff are out, but this is nothing compared to e girl in a lab on e same floor who lives with a similar birthmark covering half of her entire face.
all nicknames courtesy of e cat's dad.
